Finding Your Aurora: An Alaskan LGBTQ+ Fiction Anthology

Edited By: Shelby Anderson
Publish Date: May 15, 2024
Author(s): Multiple
Format: ebook, paperback
Price: $3.99 ebook; $12 paperback

Alaskan queerness is a different experience to that of our urban LGBTQ+ counterparts. Metropolitan cities like Seattle bustle with the vibrance of an out and proud queer community, while we often prefer the quiet peace that Alaskans are familiar with and surrounded by. We’re more likely to find ourselves perched on a four-wheeler on top of one of our mountains than we are to be in the center of a wide-scale and rowdy pride parade.

Rather than large collectives, we have a small local connections and events. We are few, but when one LGBTQ+ person finds another here, we can develop deep connections that last for a lifetime.

Here, in Finding Your Aurora, is a space for we Alaskans who also happen to identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning, among other labels like asexual and intersex). Now we can all meet each other and experience each other’s perspectives through these fiction stories.

Tales from Under the Desert Palm short story anthology

Published By: Desert Palm Press
Publish Date: December 27, 2022
Author: Nine DPP authors
Format: ebook, print
Price: $7.50

Nine authors. Nine short stories. These prequels and sequels will lead you further into the characters and stories you have loved. Nat Burns−And to the Child; Rae D. Magdon−Bombs Just Happen; Kellie Doherty−Dangers in the Daylight; Ann Tonnell−Family of Choice; Toni Draper−Miracle on 34th Street; Janis Miles−Out and About; Jazzy Mitchell−Scheduling Happiness; Ellen Hoil−Stand by Your Girl; S.L. Kassidy−Warrior Class Claiming the Stars

My story “Dangers in the Daylight” focuses on Char, who loyal readers will remember from Misti’s story Sunkissed Feathers & Severed Ties. Char goes through a significant change at the end of Misti’s book and this short story continues Char’s journey. She’s dealing with what happened to her and is training to be part of the Cinder Brigade (a battalion of warriors for Ponuriah, the sun goddess), and this story focuses on Char’s final fight to determine which wave she’ll be in. It features sibling dynamics, the lengths a person will go to save their loved ones, and making deals with a devil (or in this case, a sun goddess). You’ll even meet Ponuriah herself in all her fiery, fierce and deadly glory!

All proceeds from the sale of this book will go to helping True Colors United. Their purpose is to implement innovative solutions to youth homelessness that focus on the unique experiences of LGBTQ young people.

Note: Unfortunately, this publication closed down in March 2021. I’m thinking of gifting this flash fiction story to my readers, though, so keep an eye out for that in the future!

Flight - Queer Sci Fi & Mischief Corner Books Flash Fiction Anthology

Published By: Queer Sci Fi and Mischief Corner Books
Published Date:  Sept. 21, 2016
Author: Various
Cover & Illustrations Artist: Mila May
Format: N/A
Price: Out of Print

A 300-word story should be easy, right? Many of our entrants say it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever written. Queer Sci Fi's Annual Flash Fiction Contest challenges authors to write a complete LGBTQ speculative fiction micro-story on a specific theme. "Flight" leaves much for the authors to interpret—winged creatures, flight and space vehicles, or fleeing from dire circumstances. Some astonishing stories were submitted—from horrific, bloodcurdling pieces to sweet, contemplative ones—and all LGBTQ speculative fiction. The stories in this anthology include AI’s and angels, winged lions, and wayward aliens. Smart, snappy slice of life pieces written for entertainment or for social commentary. Join us for brief and often surprising trips into 110 speculative fiction authors’ minds.

My flash fiction piece was entitled A Sub Mechanic's Panic.
